The Arena
Geralt of Rivia was hired to clear a battlefield of the creatures that came at night to feed on the dead. When he arrived, the creatures were already dead, hundreds of them, cut in half, and a man in black armor sat among the bodies, sharpening a sword the size of a door.
Geralt’s medallion was trembling. That usually meant monsters, or magic, or both. He drew his silver sword. Guts looked up, saw the strange cat-like eyes and the white hair, and decided that a man with eyes like that was probably one more monster.
Round One
Geralt is a master of the pirouette, the fluid spinning style of the witchers, and he flowed around the Dragonslayer’s first swing, cutting at Guts’s side. Steel rang on armor. Guts did not even flinch.
Geralt threw Aard, a blast of telekinetic force, and staggered him. He cast Igni and wrapped him in flames. Guts walked through the fire, swung, and the Dragonslayer missed Geralt by an inch and cut a dead troll clean in half behind him. Geralt’s eyes widened. That sword was not a sword. That was a siege weapon.
The Turn
Geralt drank a potion and his eyes went black, his reflexes sharpening, his body accelerating. He slipped inside the Dragonslayer’s reach and opened two deep cuts through gaps in Guts’s armor. Blood ran down the black plates.
Guts answered the only way he knew. The Berserker Armor closed over his face in a snarling wolf’s helm, and he moved faster than a man of his size should be able to move, the Dragonslayer swinging like a whip. Geralt dodged, dodged again, then cast Quen, a shimmering shield, as the giant sword came down. The shield shattered. Geralt flew.
The Finish
Geralt got up with broken ribs and a numb arm, and fought on. He is too stubborn to quit and too professional to panic. He slipped, cut and burned, landing hit after hit, each one a wound that would have dropped a griffin.
The armor kept Guts going through all of it. Finally Geralt’s footwork, slowed by the broken ribs, was a heartbeat late, and the flat of the Dragonslayer caught him in the chest and drove him into the mud. The silver sword spun away into the darkness.
Guts tore off the helmet, breathing hard, and stood over him. Then he noticed the medallion, the swords, the worn gear, and recognised something. “You hunt them too,” he said. Geralt coughed. “For coin.” Guts sat down heavily beside him. “Coin’s a better reason than mine.”
The verdict
Guts wins
Geralt is the more versatile fighter, with signs, potions and superb footwork, but Guts hits far harder, is far more durable, and the Berserker Armor lets him fight through the damage Geralt deals.
- Raw powerThe Dragonslayer shatters Geralt’s defensive signs and sword.
- The Berserker ArmorIt keeps Guts fighting through wounds that would stop anyone.
- DurabilityGuts has survived fights against demons far stronger than Geralt’s monsters.
How the rematch could go differently: With a day to prepare, the right oils and potions, and a plan to fight on his terms, Geralt the professional could find a way to win.
