The Arena

Doppo Orochi has fought a tiger with his bare hands, and has the scars to prove it. When an American martial artist who claimed to carry the power of a dragon in his fist visited the Shinshinkai dojo, Doppo insisted on testing that claim personally.

Danny Rand bowed at the edge of the training floor. Doppo’s students lined the walls, silent. Doppo removed his eyepatch, which was never a good sign for anyone.

Round One

Doppo’s karate was brutally direct. His fists, hardened by decades of striking trees and stones, came in like hammers, and Danny felt every block jar him to the shoulder.

Danny countered with the flowing techniques of K’un-Lun, redirecting the hammers, striking at nerve points along Doppo’s arms and ribs. Doppo grunted, adapted, and caught Danny with a reverse punch to the sternum that knocked the wind from him.

Doppo pressed forward the way Shinshinkai fighters do, absorbing Danny’s precise strikes to land his own heavy ones. A low kick buckled Danny’s knee. A spinning back fist split his lip. Danny reset, wiped the blood away and adjusted, keeping Doppo at the edge of his reach and stinging him with fast palm strikes to the eye and throat. Each man learned the other’s rhythm.

The Turn

Doppo pressed, landing a kick to the thigh that nearly took Danny’s leg out and a strike to the temple that made the room swim. The students roared.

Danny stepped back, closed his eyes, and focused his chi. His right fist began to glow gold, the dragon’s mark burning on his chest. Doppo, who respects anything powerful, set his feet and invited the strike.

The students had gone silent. They had seen their master fight many men, but never one whose fist glowed like a lantern. Doppo’s smile came back slowly, wider than before. “Good,” he said. “Show me.”

The Finish

Doppo threw his strongest punch, the one that has killed a tiger, at the same instant Danny threw the Iron Fist. The two fists met in the middle of the dojo. For a heartbeat, they held.

Then the chi in Danny’s fist broke through. Doppo’s arm buckled, and the shock carried through his body and threw him across the dojo into a rack of training boards, which exploded into splinters around him.

Doppo lay among the broken wood, looking at his hand, which had never failed him before. Then he laughed and called for sake. “A dragon,” he said. “Of course. Next time, I will fight a dragon properly.” Danny stayed for dinner, and for a week of training.

The verdict

Iron Fist wins

Doppo is the harder hitter in a straight exchange of karate, but the Iron Fist channels a mystical force no amount of conditioning can match, and it wins the decisive collision.

  • The Iron FistChi focused into a punch harder than steel.
  • VersatilityDanny’s K’un-Lun training blends strikes, redirection and pressure points.
  • DurabilityDanny absorbs Doppo’s heavy blows long enough to charge the fist.

How the rematch could go differently: If Doppo forced a fast, brutal exchange before Danny could focus his chi, his karate could finish it first.
