The Arena
Light Yagami found a way into another world through a rift that a Shinigami showed him, and he arrived in Metropolis with his Death Note and his ambition intact. A city full of super-powered criminals and corrupt billionaires seemed to him the perfect place to build a new world. He chose his first target carefully: the most famous villain-billionaire in the city, Lex Luthor.
Lex had no idea that a notebook could kill him. He only knew that in the past week, eleven Metropolis criminals had died of heart attacks in exactly the same way, and that patterns are always the work of someone.
Round One
Light watched Lex Luthor give a press conference on television, memorised his face, and wrote “Lex Luthor” in the Death Note. He waited forty seconds, smiling. On screen, Lex kept talking. And kept talking. And did not die.
Light’s smile faded. He tried again with a different spelling. Nothing. For the first time since finding the notebook, he felt the ground move under him. Across the city, Lex’s security systems noted a spike in visits to the LexCorp press page from a single hotel room, right after each conference ended.
The Turn
Lex, a man who has spent his life expecting assassination from aliens, gods and rivals, never appears in public himself. Every press conference is given by a perfectly engineered android double, wearing his face and speaking his words. The Death Note needs the true face and the true name. Light had only ever seen a machine.
Meanwhile, Lex had worked out that the heart-attack killings started after a strange energy reading near a downtown hotel. He began to narrow the list of guests, quietly, the way he narrows the list of everything he wants to destroy.
The Finish
Light realised he was being hunted when a LexCorp employee knocked on his hotel door with a polite invitation to meet Mr. Luthor in person. Light went, notebook hidden in his jacket, certain that this time he would finally see the real face.
He sat across a table from Lex, wrote the name under the table with a hidden pen, and smiled. Lex smiled back. Forty seconds passed. “Another android,” Light whispered. “Of course,” said the android Lex. “Did you think I would let a man who kills with a notebook into a room with me?”
The doors opened, and security took the Death Note from his jacket. Light fought, screamed, schemed, and lost. Somewhere in a hidden bunker, the real Lex Luthor examined the notebook with great interest, and decided that Superman should never, ever learn about it.
The verdict
Lex Luthor wins
Light is a genius with a weapon that kills almost anyone, but Lex Luthor is a genius with resources and paranoia to match, and he never shows his real face, which makes the Death Note useless against him.
- ParanoiaLex never appears in public himself, defeating the Death Note’s face requirement.
- ResourcesLexCorp’s surveillance tracks Light down within days.
- ExperienceLex has spent decades outthinking threats far stranger than a notebook.
How the rematch could go differently: If Light caught a single glimpse of the real Lex, the notebook would end the contest in forty seconds.
