The Arena

A magical anomaly opened inside the Sanctum Sanctorum, and out of it fell a loud, short young man with a black grimoire, shouting about becoming the Wizard King. Doctor Strange tried to send him home with a simple spell. The spell hit the boy and vanished.

Strange frowned and tried again. Nothing. Asta drew an enormous black sword from his grimoire and grinned. “Sorry, mister, I don’t do magic. I cut it!” Strange, intrigued despite himself, raised his hands. The Sanctum would have to forgive them.

Round One

Strange opened with the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, a spell that has bound gods. Asta sliced through them with the Demon-Slayer Sword, and the bands dissolved into nothing. Strange tried mystic bolts, a shield, a teleportation spell. Asta cut through every one of them as if they were paper.

Strange had never fought anything like this. His magic was useless against that black sword. So he adapted, levitating objects with spells and hurling them at Asta: furniture, books, a suit of armor. Physical objects could not be cancelled. They hit hard.

A bookshelf caught Asta full in the back and sent him sprawling across the floor. He bounced up immediately, rubbing his head, and laughed. “Okay, that one was smart!” Strange, floating above the wreckage of his own library, found that he was enjoying himself far more than he should.

The Turn

Strange folded the room into the Mirror Dimension, a trick that has trapped even Gojo, and the Sanctum became a shifting maze of reflections. Asta looked around, confused, the floor sliding beneath him.

Then he swung his sword at the air itself. The anti-magic tore through the dimensional fabric, and the Mirror Dimension shattered around them like glass, dropping both of them back into the real Sanctum. Strange stared at the boy, genuinely shocked. No one had ever done that.

The Finish

Strange tried one last thing, a powerful spell to slow time around Asta. The anti-magic swept it away. Asta charged with the Black Asta form, black energy flowing from his grimoire, and his speed was overwhelming.

He did not strike Strange with the blade. He cut through every protective ward around the sorcerer in a single sweep and stopped the flat of the sword at Strange’s chest. Every shield the Sorcerer Supreme had built was gone.

Strange lowered his hands slowly and began to laugh. “Remarkable. You are the most dangerous person I have ever met, and you do not even know how to use magic.” Asta beamed. “I know! I’m going to be the Wizard King!” Strange spent a week studying him, and Asta ate everything in the Sanctum’s kitchen.

Somewhere upstairs, Wong surveyed the damage to the library and quietly began a list of everything the boy would be helping to repair.

The verdict

Asta wins

Doctor Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme and far more powerful in general, but Asta’s anti-magic cancels his spells, dispels his wards and even breaks the Mirror Dimension, leaving Strange almost nothing to fight with.

  • Anti-magicAsta’s swords cancel Strange’s spells on contact.
  • Hard counterStrange’s entire arsenal is magical; Asta’s is not.
  • SpeedBlack Asta moves faster than Strange can find a non-magical answer.

How the rematch could go differently: A Strange who fought only with physical objects, or with Agamotto’s artifacts, could keep Asta at bay long enough to find a weakness.
