The Arena
Reed Richards built a portal to study the multiverse, and the first thing that came through it was a skinny young man in a straw hat who immediately ate every snack in the laboratory. When Reed asked him to please return to his own dimension, Luffy noticed Reed’s arm stretching across the room to reach a control panel and gasped in delight.
“You’re rubber too?” Reed explained that he was not rubber, he was a scientifically altered elastic polymer state. Luffy did not listen. “Let’s fight!”
Round One
Luffy’s first Gum-Gum Pistol stretched across the lab and hit Reed in the face. Reed’s head stretched back like taffy and snapped forward again, unharmed. He wrapped himself around Luffy like a giant rubber band and squeezed. Luffy laughed, because squeezing rubber does not hurt rubber.
They tumbled across the lab and out onto the island’s beach, a tangle of stretching limbs. It was the strangest fight either of them had ever had. Neither could hurt the other with blunt force. Both of them found it hilarious.
The Turn
Reed began to think, which is his greatest weapon. He noticed that Luffy’s punches were stronger when they carried his whole body weight, and he stretched himself into a parachute, then a net, then a giant fist of his own, testing angles, calculating forces. His third idea, a spring-loaded slingshot of his own body, hit Luffy hard enough to bury him in the sand.
Luffy climbed out, grinning, and his chest began to beat like a drum. Gear Fifth. His hair turned white, his body turned into something like living rubber in the world itself, and suddenly the beach under Reed’s feet became rubber too. The sea bounced. The sky stretched.
The Finish
Reed stared, astonished. His mind tried to analyse what was happening, a man rewriting physics around himself for fun, and it could not. Luffy grabbed the lightning out of a passing storm cloud like a rope and swung Reed around in circles by his stretched-out leg.
Reed tried every scientific trick he knew. Luffy just laughed and turned each one into a joke. Finally, Luffy wound up a punch the size of the island, bouncing off the rubbery sky, and dropped it on Reed with all the force of a cartoon anvil.
Reed lay flat on the beach, stretched out like a pancake, dazed. He slowly reformed, adjusted his glasses, and stared at Luffy. “That should not be possible.” Luffy, out of breath, flopped down beside him. “I know! Isn’t it fun?” Reed started taking notes.
The verdict
Monkey D. Luffy wins
Their elastic bodies cancel each other’s blunt attacks and Reed’s genius gives him the early edge, but Gear Fifth lets Luffy rewrite the rules of the fight itself, something even Reed’s mind cannot counter.
- Gear FifthLuffy turns his surroundings into rubber and bends physics.
- HakiLuffy can strike past an elastic body in a way Reed cannot.
- UnpredictabilityReed’s calculations cannot keep up with Luffy’s cartoon logic.
How the rematch could go differently: Against a Luffy without Gear Fifth, Reed’s intellect and elasticity could trap him or outmanoeuvre him with science.
