The Arena
Carol Danvers was patrolling the edge of known space when she picked up an energy signature unlike any she had ever recorded: a single person radiating more power than a fleet of warships. She flew out to investigate and found a short, scowling man with spiky black hair, training alone in an asteroid field, blowing apart rocks the size of mountains.
Vegeta looked her over. “Another warrior who thinks she is strong. Go home, woman, before I am forced to prove otherwise.” Carol cracked her knuckles and lit up like a star. “Oh, I’m going to enjoy this.”
Round One
Captain Marvel hit first, a photon blast that vaporised the asteroid behind Vegeta. He caught the edge of it on his forearm and was surprised to feel a burn. He grinned. “Interesting.” Then he went Super Saiyan, his hair blazing gold, and hit her so hard she flew through three asteroids in a row.
Carol absorbed the energy of each impact, growing brighter and stronger with every blow, and came back hitting harder than before. For a while the asteroid field lit up like a fireworks show, two golden figures trading blows faster than the eye could follow.
Vegeta was impressed despite himself, and annoyed at being impressed. He called her technique sloppy, her stance amateurish, her flying graceless. Carol called him short. The next exchange was considerably more violent than the first.
The Turn
Vegeta noticed that every energy attack he threw made Carol stronger. His Galick Gun exploded against her, and she simply drank it in, glowing like a nova. For a moment, she had the upper hand, her punches carrying the power of his own attacks back into his face.
So Vegeta stopped using energy and fought with pure physical strength and Ultra Ego, the state that grows stronger the more he is hurt. Every blow Carol landed made him more powerful. Every punch he threw was raw physical force with nothing for her to absorb.
The Finish
Carol realised too late that she had been fighting a man who becomes stronger the more damage he takes. Her photon blasts made Vegeta more dangerous. Her punches made him more dangerous. She had been feeding his power with every hit.
Vegeta’s final blow was a simple punch to the stomach, but behind it was all the damage she had dealt him, turned into strength. Captain Marvel folded around his fist and drifted, stunned, among the drifting rocks.
Vegeta hovered beside her, panting, and did not finish her. “You are strong,” he admitted, as if it pained him. “For someone from a weak universe.” Carol coughed, then laughed. “Rematch. You’ll lose.” For once, Vegeta smiled.
The verdict
Vegeta wins
Captain Marvel absorbs energy and gets stronger with every energy attack, but Vegeta adapts by fighting physically in Ultra Ego, a form that grows stronger the more he is hit, which turns her own offence against her.
- Ultra EgoVegeta grows stronger with every hit he takes.
- AdaptationHe stops feeding her energy attacks once he sees the pattern.
- Raw powerAt his peak, Vegeta operates at a higher level of strength.
How the rematch could go differently: A Captain Marvel in her Binary form, at full cosmic power from the start, could end it before Vegeta’s Ultra Ego builds up.
